I am choosing to credit James MacPherson for these poems. The controversy around them is old enough that I doubt it can be resolved to my satisfaction, and there's enough politics involved for me to consider all assertions unreliable. MacPherson said that he collected and translated bits of Scottish oral tradition, and he may well have done. His critics range from saying that he made things up out of whole cloth to saying he stole Irish stories to saying he cherrypicked bits of real Scottish songs, now lost, and then mashed them together into something altogether different. Given that part of those criticisms was the implication that the Scots could not possibly have ancient stories of any importance or artistry... Well. I'll list MacPherson as author because he was definitely heavily involved.
