Fic in a Box 2020
Aug. 22nd, 2020 10:38 pm[This is still a WIP, but I also may not update it further. This week is stressful, and I expect next week and the week after to be worse. I hope there's enough here to go on.]
What I want most is a story that you enjoyed writing. In many cases, I nominated and/or requested single characters. That's more aimed at not limiting you than at me not wanting those characters interacting with others. For / character interactions, I'll be happy with a G or a T rated interaction with a lot of plot.
I would much prefer getting a story you loved writing that avoids my DNWs than something you didn't enjoy writing but think is exactly what I want. Exchanges are imperfect things.
In some cases, my DNWs include things I have written and/or things that would be okay under very specific circumstances simply because it's easier to detour around the field entirely than to define the exact route for avoiding the landmines.
Me not giving a specific prompt for a character I requested does not mean I want them less. It means I got overwhelmed with all of the detail.
Generally speaking, I like::
Canon divergence.
Time travel fix-its.
Time loops with humor.
Unreliable narrators.
Two or more characters simultaneously trying to manipulate each other.
Divided loyalties.
Characters having inexplicably survived their tragic, canonical deaths.
Crossovers.
Established relationships with trust and good boundaries.
Worldbuilding, generally.
Worldbuilding that explores scaffolding/logistics in the background of canon.
Explorations of the dark implications that canon ignores.
Bisexual characters.
Genderqueer characters.
Poly characters and relationships.
Open ended stories.
5 things and variants.
Note: What I write is not necessarily consistent with what I like to read. I read a lot less porn than I write and am not necessarily interested in any particular kink, even when I've written it more than once. Gen is good. G, T, or M rated relationships are also good. I'm not saying no sex scenes or no explicit sex, more that such things aren't the point for me.
DNW: drowning or risk of drowning, sinking ships or boats, anything underwater, cancer, incest, non-canonical death of requested characters, gore, underage (under 18), A/B/O, mpreg, bleak/hopeless endings, vampires, were-creatures, unicorns, zombies, mundane AUs, women as victims of rape, harm to children, death of children, mentor/protege sex or romance, humiliation of requested characters, soulmates/soulbonds, reincarnation, bestiality, fusions
Requested Fandoms:
Chronicles of Amber - Roger Zelazny
Both Corwin and Merlin are unreliable narrators, and they're frequently repeating what other people have told them rather than things they observed personally. That leaves a lot of room for stories that offer different truths.
For this canon, I mostly don't mind incest. The main characters are more or less immortal and generally not bound to our moral and ethical standards. They're also prone to manipulating each other via any means and to extreme choices without considering the cost. I'm mostly not keen on anybody/Coral because she comes across as so very, very young. Keeping the canon about her and Merlin is okay, but I would prefer not to focus on that relationship or on the thing with her and the Jewel of Judgment.
I'm good with something that ignores the Merlin books entirely or with something that assumes that the powers and politics in the Merlin books are things Corwin didn't know about. If you want to do something weird with Corwin's Pattern or the Unicorn or the Abyss, have at it. If you want to focus on Dara and the Courts, again, have at it.
A lot of the characters I'm requesting have very small parts in canon. Some of them are inconsistent in their behavior in ways that don't fit with what Corwin and/or Merlin say about them. Some of them are only referenced as long dead former queens.
For Oberon's exes, I'd like to see how they navigated Amber's court and how they held their own. Why did each of them get involved with him? Politics? Passion? Religion? How did they deal with their step-children? Were they powers in their own rights? Are any of them actually still alive somewhere out in Shadow?
Because people can breathe in Rebma, things set there are an exception to my not wanting to deal with underwater situations. Please still avoid references to drowning or risk of drowning.
These books are still in print but are not available as ebooks. The post-Merlin series short stories are harder to find but also, IMO, aren't crucial canon.
Fandom specific DNW: The non-Zelazny prequels. Focus on Oberon/Deela. Explicit sex involving anyone/Oberon.
Dreaming of Sunshine - Silver Queen
I'm definitely open to Gardens AUs here and to crossovers with canon Naruto via whatever handwavy means suit. WCE time travel (or other time travel) could be fun. This fandom crosses over with others in potentially interesting ways; my preference is for characters traveling physically rather than via reincarnation.
I'd enjoy other characters in addition to those nominated. I like the way that DoS broadens and deepens the characters from Naruto. I'd enjoy something exploring the broader world. I'd enjoy a mission fic.
Part of what I like about DoS is the interactive recursive portions of the fandom and all of the creative tangents.
Fandom specific DNWs:: Explicit sex, Romance involving Shikako
The source fic can be found on FFnet.
The Hollow (cartoon)
Generally speaking, I like the sense of layered story elements without a really clear sense that any emergence into 'reality' was guaranteed to be true. I don't mind if the characters are right in all of their suppositions or if things are more complicated. Even the clearly a game elements are complex in ways that hint at the programmers having left the gaps deliberately.
We don't see enough of the non-cartoon world to be sure that it's objectively real. Is it really a game show? A psychology experiment? A prison? A stealthy way of altering the characters' real world opinions? It's established early on that playing with the characters' memories is part of the set up. Who knows what the longer term repercussions might be?
As far as season 2, the same layering options work for me. I'm up for following either version of the characters or both versions (or some mix of the two).
During season 1, we don't see how Reeve, Skeet, and Vanessa interacted with each other before they first encountered Adam, Kai, and Mira. Something exploring that could be fun.
How does the game show recruit participants? What sort of screening do they do? Is the company behind the technology friendly?
I've seen both seasons, but I'd be open to something diverging at the end of season 1 to follow those characters rather than the season 2 versions. I wondered a bit about the infrastructure and culture that would produce the game and send teenagers in to play. Even if they were technically safe, I could see the experience of believing they would die being traumatic.
I felt like the ending of season 2 was only a happily for now and that the characters were going to become frustrated by their situation pretty rapidly. I'm also not convinced, in spite of what he said, that only the host knows they're there. Keeping their VR going has to be somewhat resource intense and probably hard to hide.
(I'm trying to dance around the spoilers for season 2 and am likely failing. Sorry.)
If you want to do some sort of fix-it for Skeet in season 2, feel free.
Post season 2 exploration of wider VR world (taken completely at face value or not) would be welcome, too, especially if the characters start figuring out how to shape things around them rather than simply reacting to whatever comes at them.
This is a Netflix original that runs two seasons of thirteen episodes.
Canon specific DNW: Explicit sex. Altering Adam's stated sexual orientation.
Phineas and Ferb
As the character nominations suggest, I'm interested in the female characters here. I don't mind appearances from the male characters if they fit the story, but I'd prefer that the focus remain on the ladies.
I don't mind crossovers between the main universe and the 2nd Dimension and wouldn't object to exploration of the rollercoaster time travel universe.
I like Candace/Jeremy in both realities, but if you write future fic, I'm open to them no longer being together. Or still being. They're 16.
I rather liked Vanessa/Monty Monogram in the handful of episodes that included them both. I'd be curious about 2nd Dimension Vanessa meeting 2nd Dimension Monty (who never appears on screen and so might or might not exist, but 2nd Dimension Stacy is in the same boat. Hm... Vanessa/Stacy? Could be interesting. Either version of each character).
I'd prefer to leave the romantic relationships and future relationships of the younger characters in the realm of the completely theoretical. Various crushes are fine, but they're all around 10, and I'd like to leave it open that they could meet OCs in another 10-20 years and be happy that way.
in the 2nd Dimension. The Doofenshmirtz empire there is more functional than the one in the rollercoaster time travel episode. How did it happen? Why is 2nd Dimension Charlene evil? How did the Firestorm Girls become a team? What happens to them after the movie? Do Candace and Jeremy get pulled back into big adventures later on? What would canon timeline Vanessa think of the 2nd Dimension?
I'd be up for 2nd Dimension character in the main universe or canon characters in the 2nd Dimension or just 2nd Dimension characters. I'd prefer to keep something of the optimism of canon, and I'm totally good with deus ex machina coincidences in the style of canon. I don't need Danville and the Tri-State Area to make geographical sense.
I also don't mind if you go slightly more realistic on things like psychological repercussions of having lived through the Doofenshmirtz years or what it's like to live in a world that's trying to recover.
Feel free to bring in characters I didn't request, including characters from the Milo Murphy series (which also takes place in Danville and crosses over with Phineas and Ferb).
Canon specific DNW: Vanessa/Ferb, Heinz/Perry. Explicit sex.
This series is on Disney+.
The Pretender (TV)
I'm agnostic on the subject of Jarod/Miss Parker and am perfectly happy if they're paired or if they're not. I'm also happy to have just one of them in the story or neither of them in the story.
I nominated Brigitte because she kind of appears out of nowhere and never gets backstory or explanation. I thought there might be some interesting possibilities there for making The Centre and the powers behind it come into sensible focus.
For the other characters, I'd enjoy backstory or a casefic. I'd like seeing one or more of them figure out how to escape the gravitation of The Centre. I like Broots' relationship with Debbie. I like explorations of Sydney's complicated relationship with ethics and his complicity in events past and present. I wonder about Miss Parker's work before Jarod escaped.
I like Miss Parker/Thomas but was always puzzled as to why she (or Jarod or Sydney) wasn't expecting Bad Things to happen to him.
I feel that the story arc kind of broke after Thomas was murdered, though. That's the point at which I started feeling that the characters were all just spinning their wheels rather than doing anything that would make sense.
I think that Jarod and Miss Parker are both dangerous in different ways. Jarod's very definitely into psychological sadism, and I suspect that him making sure that no one dies or is permanently (physically) injured is more about him finding it more fun that way than about him having qualms about bad things happening to people he puts on the other side of that good/bad boundary.
People should be very afraid of Jarod deciding to take the gloves off.
People should be very afraid of Miss Parker murdering people in ways that look like accidents.
I'm fine with Emily and Ethan existing or not existing. I don't have a strong opinion on Miss Parker's inherited psychic power (whatever it might really be). I'm very wobbly on whether or not to take the movies as canon; there are interesting things there, to be sure, but... I'm unconvinced by the prophecies and all of that because it comes across as a half-assed retcon.
Fandom specific DNW: Sydney/Miss Parker, Jarod/Sydney, any explicit sex involving Raines and/or Lyle. Book reboot canon.
The first two seasons of this show are available for purchase on Amazon Prime, but there are four seasons and a couple of movies. I'd be happy with an AU that diverged some time in the first two seasons, though, as long as the characters are recognizable as themselves.
Please ignore the book reboot.
Sky High (2005)
I watched this movie a lot when my daughter was small, and I never actually got sick of it. I spent a lot of time wondering about things like how Sky High's cafeteria gets supplies and what the history of the larger world must look like to resemble our world so strongly while still having enough of a history of powers to have a place like Sky High.
I'm very interested in the older characters from canon. Part of that is me thinking that their stories might answer some of my worldbuilding questions; part of that is me not caring about the high school aspects of the story.
For the high school age characters, I'm most curious about their lives outside of school-- their family interactions, their hobbies, their summer jobs, their college plans. If you want to look at Sky High, I'm curious about whether any of the classes prepare people for non-hero, non-sidekick aspects of life.
Something exploring Penny and how her power affects her view of the universe would be neat. I nominated her without any solid requests in mind and with full awareness that any story about her would be inventing vast swathes of characterization, history, etc.
The divide between heroes and sidekicks hints at some pretty deep societal problems, and I'm not clear as to what sort of jobs these kids will be prepared for if they don't go into either crime or crime fighting.
If you explore backstory for the older characters, I would be fine with a canon divergence, including one that made the movie not happen.
I'd particularly be open to a divergence that gets rid of Stitches because I find his relationship with Gwen horrifically creepy in serious DNW ways. That said, please don't show the bit with Sue getting turned into a baby and carried off by Stitches. If it's not on screen, I can ignore it.
I'm curious about why on earth Josie ended up with Steve because he does not come across, in the movie, as having charm or brains. I'm also curious about how she interacts with the world as Jetstream and what's involved on the public relations, legal, and political side of things. What about friendships?
For anything involving Barron Battle and/or Ms Peace, I'm curious about how they got involved with each other. Did they know or were they dating as civilians? Or did they have to team up against some outside threat? What sort of powers do/did they have and what sort of backgrounds? How is Ms Peace viewed in the hero community afterward? Does Barron ever break out and visit his son? What are Barron's villainous goals? Money? Power? Thrills?
I nominated Barron Battle & Sue Tenny because they'd have been at Sky High at around the same time (judging by the yearbook), and I always wondered if they intersected with each other and what that would look like. I wouldn't object to post-Sky High Barron/Sue as long as it doesn't involve infidelity (consensual poly with Warren's mother would be fine as would something before or after the Battle/Peace relationship).
I view Gwen and Sue as distinct people who aren't automatically alike, no more than identical twins raised apart. Something contrasting them with each other could be fascinating. I'm curious about what Gwen thought she was going to do with all of those babies. Did she have minions to raise them? Robot nannies? Sue would be a great window on the history of superpowers and of Sky High. Did she interact with Jonathan Boy at all? They might well have been in the same year.
This movie is on Disney+. It was also not very expensive on DVD the last time I checked. It runs 90 minutes.
Canon specific DNW: Explicit sex. Marvel crossovers. DC crossovers.
Weiss Kreuz
This was the first fandom in which I posted fic, and I still go back to it. The inconsistencies and gaps are part of what I find attractive about it-- They can accommodate a lot of different sorts of weirdness. Anyone can be interpreted as a terrible person or as pulling strings or as having been duped or... Sorcerers, immortals, youkai, alien invasions, mad science, curses, time travel, political intrigue, ambition, casefic, whatever works.
I went for solo characters here because I'm not particularly attached to pairings or groupings. Feel free to have my requested characters interact with each other and with other canonical characters. I'm also interested in Weiss, Schwarz, and Schreient as groups if that's a thing of interest or something focused on Takatori family dynamics.
I'm no more than tepid on most of Gluhen and on the OAVs. I don't need them to be canon, but I also don't mind if they are (mostly. Please don't give me Yohji's canon arc for Gluhen).
I don't know either of the manga series or much about the drama CDs and would prefer not to treat them as canon. I like the idea of Omi reclaiming his identity as Mamoru; I'm less thrilled about him becoming a loyal son/grandson (if it's your preference, though, go for it!).
I prefer Crawford and Schuldig as ruthless and amoral. I prefer Kritiker as ambiguously moral but am open to different interpretations of who's pulling the strings and what the organization is really trying to do. I prefer Omi as less naive and more manipulative than he lets on; he's been with Kritiker a long time when the anime starts.
I'm open to most m/m pairings in this canon as long as the characters are over 18.
Canon specific DNW: Crawford/Nagi, Masafumi/Tot, or anyone/Neu (somebody/Asuka is fine as long as it's clearly consensual).
As far as I know, the parts of canon that I'm most interested in aren't available in the US except on DVD.
Crossover Works
